Tafseer Classes
QURANIC EXEGESIS (TAFSEER) WORKSHOP: A HERMENEUTIC AND PHILOSOPHICAL ENQUIRY INTO SURAH YA-SEEN
WHEN: Wednesday (Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8), 8pm
WHERE: Lecture Room 1, Christ Church College.
"My heart desires that that Surah Ya-Seen should be present in the heart of every member of my community"
The Quran is the single text that binds over 1 billion people across the world, adored by Muslims not only because of its sacred status, but because of its depth of meaning and unique literary form. Although most know that the Quran is regarded as Islam's holy text, very little attention has been paid in popular consciousness to its rich exegetic history. Grammarians, theologians, mystics and philosophers alike have been captivated by its literary grace and subtle allusions. Volumes of books have been compiled attempting to unlock the meanings of the Quran, a book recognised as the peak of Arabic eloquence and considered "inimitable" in form and meaning.
Brothers Circle
Brothers' Circle: tajweed & seerah
Tajweed Class
WHEN: Wednesday, 7pm – 8pm
WHERE: Leung Room, Pembroke College
After overwhelming demand, the OUISOC is pleased to announce its inaugural Tajweed class. Tajweed is an ancient tradition that deals with the art of Qur’anic recitation. We are fortunate to have teaching these classes Ismail Lala, a graduate student at the Oriental Institute, who has memorised the Qur’an, and has served as an Imam for several years. This will be a unique and rare opportunity for many, and a chance to master this art is not to be missed!
In the Footstephs of the Beloved: Seerah Class
WHEN: Wednesday, 8pm – 9pm
WHERE: Leung Room, Pembroke College
Seerah, or the Prophetic Biography, is deeply embedded in Islamic culture and tradition. Stories about the Prophet are lovingly repeated in coffee houses and mosques alike across the Islamic world. In more recent times, the Prophetic Biography has become a fascinating point of study in Western academia, most recently with the publication of Professor Tariq Ramadan’s interpretive account of the Prophetic Biography. The OUI Soc welcomes you to join our own circle of Seerah, which will slowly guide us from the birth of the prophet, the inception of Islam, until his death and burial.
Dua Kumayl
thursday: du'a kumayl
WHEN: Thursday, 6.15pm.
WHERE: Wolfson Room, Jowett Walk (Balliol Annexe)
Dua Kumayl is amongst the most beautiful prayers that we have in the Islamic tradition. Taught to Kumayl by the Prophet’s cousin, Imam Ali, the prayer elegantly places the created in front of the Creator, and humbly petitions for purification.
